About the theatre
"Just as we cannot use the ships once sailed by Saracens,
in art , we must seek forms that respond to contemporary life" Kazimir Malevich
Welcome to Malevich Theatre, a pioneering Melbourne independent theatre company where tradition meets innovation.
Founded by a group of Victorian creatives, Malevich Theatre is at the forefront of Melbourne contemporary theatre.
Malevich Theatre specializes in bold and innovative theatrical performances, rooted in the classical Russian school of psychological theatre of Konstantin Stanislavsky.
As a leading Melbourne experimental theatre company, we are inspired by the art of Kazimir Malevich and the movements of Suprematism and Bauhaus.
Our productions fuse Stanislavsky’s psychological realism with Vsevolod Meyerhold’s biomechanics. This unique combination creates performances that are both intellectually stimulating and viscerally impactful, setting us apart in the Melbourne theatre scene.
"Malevich Lab", our acting school is a hub for emerging Melbourne artists and contemporary playwrights.
Through workshops, our students are exploring new acting techniques that expand and deepen their acting skills.
As a leading Melbourne contemporary theatre company, Malevich Theatre is more than just a performance space; it is a cultural hub for Australian creatives and a beacon for those who seek to experience theatre that challenges, provokes, and inspires. Every performance, workshop, and exhibition is a journey into the unknown, a step beyond the familiar into the realm of the extraordinary.

Exhibitions and Immersive guided tours.
At Malevich Theatre, creativity knows no boundaries. Our members are not only talented actors but also gifted designers and visual artists.
We believe in providing a safe and supportive space where everyone can express themselves fully, whether on stage or through other artistic mediums.
Our exhibition "No Place Like Home" was dedicated to the Experience of Immigration and Being a Diverse Person in the Modern World.
This powerful exhibition featured the works of young Victorian artists, offering them a platform to share their unique perspectives and stories. Held during the "Open House Melbourne" festival, the exhibition resonated deeply with the community, attracting over 200 visitors.
In addition to hosting exhibitions, we ran immersive guided tours that illustrated the history of our home, the "Fitzroy and Collingwood Friendly Society's Dispensary", also known as "Russian House Melbourne".
